Meet Mr. Nickel

1) What is your favorite subject to teach and why?

My favorite subject to teach is reading because the possibilities to apply reading skills are endless. I really enjoy using comics such as Calvin and Hobbes, as well as Diary of a Wimpy Kid to help the students practice skills that they have learned in the classroom. It is great to see a student excited to read and become a more active reader.

2) What is the hardest subject to teach and why?

Writing is the hardest subject to teach. I have been really working at showing studentshow I write and working on my pieces in front of the class to model a good example. At times this may be difficult because I am sharing my ideas, as well as my thinking with an audience on the spot, so that can see each of the stages of the writing process.

3) What is your favorite book to read to your students?

Shaq and the Magic Beanstalk. It features the main character Shaquille O'Neal going through each of the fairytales. The students love finding pictures of Shaq hidden throughout the book.

4) What is your favorite fourth grade memory?

I remember I had this teacher who inspired us to learn through music and had a creative ways to help us remember information. Every day we went to school he had something for us to discover and made learning fun.

5) What do you think fourth graders like most about fourth grade?

I think they like learning more about something that they are interested in and having fun. Each and every day the class cracks up laughing when we are doing something. Students like learning to be fun and I try to help make it fun every day.
